For most of the winter and spring, our amazing volunteers have been working tirelessly with one goal in mind: to repair kids bikes. On Saturday, June 25th all of the hard work paid off as we delivered and distributed 500 bikes to youth in the North Lawndale community. Families lined the sidewalks early in the morning at North Lawndale College Prep Collin’s Campus to choose a bike, which were arranged in classrooms by size. Kids also received a helmet and lock, and participated in a bike safety class. The excitement was felt throughout the day as many youth recipients received their first bike ever! By the end of the event, there were 500 more bikes cruising along the streets of North Lawndale.
The event, called Cycle of Peace, was a collaboration between Working Bikes, TAG Foundation, the North Lawndale Community Restorative Justice Hub, Active Transportation Alliance, 10th District CAPS, and the Chicago Bicycle Ambassadors. Not only did this event provide bikes to deserving kids, it will also help promote cycling as a sustainable and healthy means of transportation in the community.
Working Bikes was thrilled to be able to participate in such a successful event, and we will continue to further our mission through events like these and our local donation program. A HUGE thank you to our amazing volunteers for making this event possible!
